Websites are used for a number of different reasons and one of these reasons is to produce content in the form of blog posts. It can be a news piece for a journalist’s website, an insightful piece about a part of a business or any number of creative pieces of work consisting of written and photographic content.
WordPress is one of the most popular website hosting services, and that is the service we will be focusing on in this piece. How do you produce a blog post for your WordPress website and what do you need to consider when doing so?
Content and Appearance
The bulk of a blog post and the most important part is the content. When you go to create a post on WordPress all you need to do is select “Create a New Post” and from here you can begin writing your content.
There are many options that wordpress provides with regards to producing content for a blog post. It includes all the usual typography settings that you’d expect to find in a place where text is produced, but you can insert links, embed video and add images.
The key here is to be creative with it all. Make sure you spread out your paragraphs and make the post as readable as possible. If you are unsure of what the layout will look like once it is on your web then there is a handy “preview” tool which WordPress has which can be very handy.
Add images where possible and even embed video, YouTube videos tend to embed quite well into pieces. This is what we do when we publish our blogs and videos simultaneously on Laing Media Ltd. In fact you may even see the video to this blog embed right above.
TOP TIP: Remember to frequently save your blog post. Use the “Save as draft” option to keep your piece up-to-date so that if you lose internet connection while working on it or the website crashes then your most recent work will be saved to continue working from.
To increase its reach and likelihood of appearing on searches, your blog should attempt to incorporate some thought to SEO. WordPress has an AIOSEO Score (All-in-one Search Engine Optimisation) feature which gives you a good indication as to what your SEO is like. Are you using the right words that will appear in searches? Do you have a good range of media in the piece? These sorts of things and more will all contribute towards this score and the visibility of the piece once posted.
WordPress also has a “tags” section when producing a blog post. It is here where you should highlight the key words, people and places referenced in the piece which are the most prominent and mostly likely to be found on searches.
Depending on how your website is set up you’ll have to categorise your post or have it appear on a certain page. If you have a specific section for blog posts for example that you’d like it to go in then you’ll have to tick the correct box for it to go on that part of the site.
Once you are happy with your content, SEO and know where/how you’d like it to appear on your WordPress website then the final step to post it is to make it public. You can either press “Publish” and your blog will go live straight away or you can schedule it to become live at a specific time.
